So, you’ve had your session, you have all these great photos… and now what? With Christmas fast approaching, you might be wondering just how to use those photos as a gift for family and friends. I’ve come up with the three best ways to gift photos this season, all tried and true ways that my own family has used!
Always a classic, the framed portrait is perfect to give to grandparents, aunts and uncles, parents, friends, you name it – the list goes on! I find my parents especially love new photographs of my kids, there’s something about the nostalgia of hanging a photo on the wall, and watching your kids grow through photographs. Side note: Those photos above are my kids when they were 5, 3, and 8 (?) months? Presently, they are almost 13, 11, and 8… Excuse me, Time? Can you please slow the heck down?!
This custom calendar above was created last year by my grandmother… It was all photos of my grandfather, who died of cancer when I was only 2 and a half. I don’t have many memories of him (I’m lucky that I have even the two memories that I do), so a calendar like this was an amazing way to see who he was in an era before I was born. Just from looking at this calendar all year long, I feel like I “know” him so much more than I ever did before. By the way, the photo above was of my grandparents wedding day… Check out my Grandma’s dress! Isn’t it so amazing?!
So, along that note, what better way to secure your status as favourite child/grandchild than giving a custom calendar with all your portraits laid throughout? Your family gets to see your smiling faces every single day, and each month is a new fresh photo to look at. Bonus gift: Write in a couple of dates per year where you will host them for dinner!
Arranging your photos into an album is a great way to mix in old and new photos, iPhone and professional photos. I’ve made it my mission the past few years to print our iPhone photos into an album, and the kids LOVE looking through images from when they were smaller. It doesn’t seem like much right now, especially if you’re not married yet or your kids are very young… But time has a way of flying and those albums are things I will cherish now that my kids are at the you-can’t-make-me-wear-that stage *eyeroll*.
Bonus: Gift Certificate
This can work two ways! Maybe it’s been forever since your parents have had photos taken. Or possibly, you know they’d want to order their own prints or canvases from your family’s previous session with me. Either way, you can give the gift of photos through a beautifully designed gift certificate! Any amount can be purchased, or you can even purchase the certificate toward a specific purpose (i.e. Good for one mini session, good for one engagement session, etc.).
Gifts don’t always have to be super expensive – but they should always be thoughtful. The above gift ideas don’t have to break the bank but are sure to put a smile on the faces of your loved ones and last for generations!
